This V8 unit puts out 385 BHP @6500 rpm with peak torque of 515 Nm coming up @3500 rpm. The XJ flies past the 100 kph mark in 5.7 seconds and maxes out at an electronically limited 250 kph. Get into the car and push the Start Button, and the round gear dial rises up from the centre console. Very impressive. The XJ comes with Jaguar’s 6 speed “Sequential Shift” Automatic gearbox. For those who want to have some manual fun, you can shift gears using the paddles mounted behind the steering wheel. To select a gear, rotate the dial from P to D or your selected gear position. However if you want to go into S mode, you will have to slightly press the dial down when in D and then shift into S. Shifting to S mode will stiffen up the suspension a bit and your exhaust note changes automatically. Since my drive was not going to be a very long one, I did not want to deprive myself of some pleasure so I did my drive in S mode only. Step on the pedal and the engine response is immediate. The XJ just shoots forward and you soon forget that you are driving a car of this mass. This XJ manages to hide its size pretty well honestly. Its very quick indeed. The autobox does its job smoothly but I did notice a slight lag whenever the time came for a downshift. Press the pedal hard, 1 sec , and wham it just rockets ahead. The way the speedo goes on climbing is treat too watch. Though I love European diesels to the core, these powerful high revving petrols never fail to put a grin on your face.
